The question "Am I intelligent enough for university" has always concerned many undergraduates or prospective undergraduates in university. Students often worry that they lack the required level of intelligence in order to succeed in university. They always presume that the marks they obtain reflect their level of "natural cleverness", and thus making them feel like they are unable to cope in university. This has led to the emergence of the question: is a certain level of intelligence necessary for university. In response to the question, a certain level of intelligence is indeed necessary.
Intelligence is a very broad term and there is not a concrete definition about intelligence. Based on Dweck (2006 as cited in Education Scotland Foghlam Alba), intelligence is attainable and can be developed through effort and skillful practice. However, this idea has not penetrated the society widely or deeply as yet. On the other hand, Cottrell (2003) has stated that "intelligence is a general, underlying "cleverness" which is fixed for life". The meaning of that statement is that some people are born intelligent, and their intelligence is fixed throughout their lives. However, in my opinion, not all people are born intelligent and students are still able to succeed in university as long as they work hard and possess sufficient skills.
This essay will further argue the point that not all people is born with the certain level of intelligence, but however with critical thinking and effective study skills, students would be able to cope and thus succeed in university. These skills are sufficient enough for student to succeed.
Cottrell (2003) claimed possible skills that may develop intelligence may include study skills and study habits. Intelligence is often a question of good study habits, strategies and skills that can be developed (Cottrell, 2003). Every student has their own unique set of study skills; certain study skill may effective for one but not for the other students. Study skills are not merely about understanding, but also a disciplined amount of practice for the sake of improvement. Students should not just "think about" studying, but actually do it and obtain information for self-improvement (Kizlik, 2005). Sometimes, students may experience difficulty during their studies but is not due to the lack of ability, but instead the reason is due to the absence of suitable study skills. The effectiveness and efficiency of a student’s learning process is enhanced by study skills which include a variety of coordinated cognitive skills and processes. The previous research has provided a strong connection between effectiveness of study skills and academic competence among students (Gettinger & Seibert, 2002). Students are able to become more efficient, considerate, and independent learners and perform better in school through study-skills instruction (Gettinger & Seibert, 2002). It can be understood that student who develop study skill are able to study and learn more effectively and in a well-organized manner. Overall, if a student possesses a good study skill, the chance of failure will be minimize and they will be able to improve their academic performance, strategic knowledge, and affective response in university by exploiting their learning opportunities (Gettinger & Seibert, 2002). To achieve success in university, study skills are therefore primarily important and in terms of academic competence, the development and maintenance of an effective study skill across the curriculum is emphasized (Gettinger & Seibert, 2002). Although study skills is not only the skill that propels student to be more successful in university, it remains one of the most important skill that students have to be acquire in order to be successful in university.
At university, we usually learn and focus on the subject content of our course but simultaneously, we are also developing the ability to think critically. Critical thinker refers to an individual that is able to think rationally and find a connection between ideas. Wallace, Schirato & Bright (1999), stated that to be successful at university we do not only learn the contents of our chosen disciplines, but also have to develop general skills or literacies. The ability to think critically is among the most important of these skills. With critical thinking, we are able to have a better understanding of idea, data, argument and situations (Leicester, 2010).
Most of the time in university, we will be reading books and articles and also listening to lectures while being exposed to plenty of examples of people responding to the modern world. Critical thinking will teach us not to take things for granted as well as assessing issues objectively while working out better explanations and new solutions (Wallace, Schirato, & Bright, 1999). As "Good thinking is at the heart of the academic enterprise", thinking will be crucial in the sense that our own study effort has to be thoughtful and directed (Wallace, Schirato, & Bright, 1999, p.46). It helps us to identify or evaluate the useful and important ideas in the class thus making it logical. In many ways, we do not realize that the knowledge in the academic subject in our studies is actually derived from processes of thinking critically. As Stout (2007, as cited in Mayer et al., 2011) recommended, critical and analytical thinking should be able to help student in maximizing their learning and understanding in the classroom, in the same time encouraging the role of practical, creative, and wisdom skills (Mayer et al., 2011). To summarize, this means that although not all people are born intelligent, developing critical thinking skills will still help them to succeed in the university by maximizing their learning and understanding in the classroom.
In conclusion, intelligence is something that is very abstract. A certain level of intelligence is a privilege for prospective undergraduates studying in university. Intelligence, as cited in (Mayer et al., 2011) is an important component in order to achieve success in university and leadership, not forgetting the need of creativity and wisdom skills. It is showed that even you do not have certain level of intelligence; effective study skills and critical thinking will push the students to effective studies and even success in university. Effective study skills and critical thinking are fundamental skills needed to achieve success in universities, but there is also a need for other skills as well.
