BSIL established an ODC in 1997 and has been engaged in a number of projects and initiatives for BESC. These span their legacy product, Microframe Program Manager (MPM) and their contemporary product line, Business Engine. BSIL provided product development, support, testing, architecture and technology consulting and customization services to Business Engine right till their acquisition by Planview in 2007. The ODC became Planview’s ODC and BSIL continues to support Planview on both BE as well as Planview products since then.

Planview Enterprise (PVE) provides enterprises with a lot of information that is needed to anticipate and respond to changes, balance conflicting needs, map new priorities to corporate strategy, etc. PVE had several reporting assets like Datamart, Portlets, Business Objects, etc. that provided a view to these information and helped users take informed and timely decisions. The need was to bring together all the Planview Enterprise's reporting information into a single umbrella that would encourage collaboration and help faster and smarter business decision making capabilities based on real-time data.
BSI’s team collaborated with the Planview product development team to address this problem in a phase by phase approach. The team delivered various releases for the product development using Agile development methodology following the SCRUM framework.
In the first phase, the team developed a portal called as Insight Analytics. This was built on top of the Microsoft SharePoint platform and provided integration with SQL Server Analysis Services. Custom cubes were built on various modules (like Project Portfolio Management, Enterprise Portfolio Management, Service Portfolio Management, etc.). This provided the end users with the ability to slice and dice data in a multi-dimensional way by browsing several OLAP cubes through a single interface. Users were able to save the OLAP views, publish it to other users as well as view multiple views in a single Dashboard window. Custom Security was inbuilt into the OLAP cubes so that users could see only the data they have access to.
Different visualizations were added to this portal over a period of time. People were able to view Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), HeatMaps (or TreeMaps), Gauges, etc.
As a next phase, the power of SQL Server Reporting Services was brought into the portal (called as Planview Enterprise Analytics and Reporting Portal) where users could view real-time data off various data sources like Planview database, datamart, OLAP cubes, etc. A dashboarding capability built using Microsoft Silverlight was added on top of the SharePoint platform that facilitated the creation of custom dashboards by mixing and matching various reports into a single view. Dashboards could be published to various users.
The team also provided seamless integration of the ‘Insight Analytics’ and ‘Analytics and Reporting’ Portals.
The portal capabilities were extended by providing integration points with Microsoft office applications like Outlook and Excel. Office Add-ins were developed for Outlook and Excel where people could view the reports and OLAP views within the office environment. The team also added the feature of allowing end users to annotate on the reports and then email the same to various users.
A mobility portal was developed using ASP.NET MVC3 framework to provide accessibility of the reports and OLAP views over mobile devices.
A Single Sign-on mechanism was developed so that all the applications (the SharePoint portal, the mobility portal and the office applications) can get authenticated and validated off a single provider. The security could be defined in one place and all the applications adhered to it.
Additionally, the analytics designed can be exported to other MS-Office software like Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, etc.
The team also integrated Yammer, an enterprise social collaboration platform, into the portal. With this, the end users can quickly exchange nuggets of information within their organization and mostly have a commentary at a portfolio level so that ideas and thoughts can be shared and discussed within the context of a portfolio.

They frequently need access to their data that exceed the limitations of Microsoft Office tools. Yet, they still need to present the results of their analysis in formats (ppt, excel, etc.) that others can share and understand. As a result, their IT groups spend valuable time developing custom systems to channel data, reports and analysis from various systems into Microsoft Office documents, or integrating analytics into standard reporting applications. This leads to IT backlogs, long wait times for reports and analysis, and invalid analysis based on highly aggregated data. Planview wanted to bridge this gap (and helps their customer’s business) by extending the capabilities of their product to Microsoft Office applications.

Outlook Add-in:
BSI team developed an Outlook Add-in which would provide the users with a view of their dashboards (reports and OLAP Views) within the Outlook application itself. The user interface was built using the rich Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) technology. BSI team researched and recommended inclusion of a third party component from Vintasoft to provide value adds in the form of annotations. Also, the capability was added where the users can share their analytics (also annotated ones) through emails. The add-in developed is supported over Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010.
Excel Add-in:
BSI team developed an Excel Add-in which would provide the ability to the end users to browse the OLAP cubes within the context of Excel itself. A custom security mechanism was built into this implementation that helped the users see the data based on what they had access to. The centralized security module resided in the core application at the backend and the Excel Add-in adhered to it.
MSP Add-in:
BSI team developed a Microsoft Project add-in which would allow the end users to push and pull the relevant data from Planview Enterprise (PVE) without leaving the context of the Microsoft project application. Any changes made in Microsoft Project are instantly reflected in PVE, so that Portfolio planners and Project managers know the true state of all their programs and projects.

This would help the users closely coordinate and communicate at a portfolio level.
SharePoint is everywhere and surely is value to sharing stuff, but collaboration requires an interactive dialog, and that is the new ground that platforms like Yammer are bringing to life. Yammer facilitates number of consumable API’s for collaborating with Yammer. These API’s are RESTful interface to the features provided by the Yammer web interface.

BSI’s team helped Planview in integrating Yammer in their analytics product (Analytics and Reporting Portal). A web part was built on SharePoint 2010, which was primarily based on jQuery technology. This web part supports both micro-blogging (based on SharePoint lists) and integration with Yammer. A Provider Model Design Pattern was used to facilitate this. BSI’s expertise in SharePoint and jQuery helped speed up the development and was identified as the fastest development progress among other Yammer partners.
BSI helps Planview to setup and execute Web service testing framework on different environment.
Challenge/Need:
The Planview new Labor Costing feature enables a customer to cost resource with combinations of costing models. To facilitate the costing models Planview with BSI development team created new web services for system enhancements and rewrote existing ones using .NET technology with WSE 3.0 standards.
As with new software, testing of the new and modified web service was vital and this was challenge for BSI. With no tool available for automated testing, manual testing seemed to be the only way forward.
However, manual testing needed great testing effort since each web service and web method were require to be tested on different configurations of client platforms and databases.
Solution & Technology:
Evaluation of Automated testing tool that test web services & methods with various combinations of data. Cost effective automation tool evaluation (mostly open source) and support simple framework design.
Conduct Automation feasibility analysis of web service testing.
Web-service Test to support bulk upload using client external/existing database. This was tested using SOAP UI tool and framework developed to support the automated regression test of existing web-service and newly developed web-service.
Automation framework was developed using groovy script with data driven advantage and simple verification of expected and actual test results.
Web service testing framework was simple to setup and execute on different environment.
All the web services could be tested using single SOAP UI project for each environment.
Benefits:
Automated testing that the web services were tested using numerous permutation and combinations of data resulting in a defect-free release. Moreover, automation eliminated errors which could arise from human oversight while comparing actual and expected results.
Though the Automation Tool evaluation and development of Automation framework required 2 man month of effort. There was 80% saving in effort using automation for testing of web service for each subsequent testing cycle. For 1 cycle
- Manual Test Execution effort was 20 man days.
- Automated Test Execution effort was 4 man days.
This further resulted in reduced Time-to-market for each product release and on-time deliverables by BSI.
Overall testing and support costs dropped significantly. We saved 120 man days of effort for 30 test cycle.
Reusability and minimal maintenance effort was required for subsequent release with the web service testing automation framework design using SOAP UI.

Client required a partner who would function as the extended product development arm of the company, supporting its technical needs completely with no compromise in Quality and allowing the company to concentrate on core activities such as design and marketing. This brought about the need to perform Quality Engineering (QE) including thorough testing of their application.
BSI is the extended development arm of client since around 3 years at that time and was involved in the development of the flagship product right from its conception. BSI had the domain knowledge in this area and was well aware of the processes followed by client. Clearly, BSI qualified as the best vendor to carry out the job. Hence the client chose BSI as QE partner.
Solution & Technology:
BSI took up this challenging assignment of performing QE activities for the client’s Web based application. This was achieved by putting together a fully equipped onsite-offshore QE team, which generated the detailed test design / cases considering the functionality and also carried out rigorous testing of every new release. The testing solutions offered that turned in to the activities included different types of testing in various environments/setups:

BSI helps Planview to setup and execute testing framework using WATIR for Analytics product.
Challenge/Need:
The client has a web based analytical product, Insight Analytics, which is used for creating adhoc reports, administration and publishing of these reports to other users. The adhoc reports are created over multidimensional cubes which were built over Microsoft’s OLAP tool SSAS 2005. The challenge in front of Planview was to monitor the data integrity of the cubes and check for any issues in reporting application.
Development of cubes was an ongoing process as new dimension and measures were added every fortnight. So manual verification of cubes for regression issues every time was a very option.
However, manual testing needed great testing effort since each dimension and measures were require to be tested for different combinations.
Solution & Technology:
Evaluation of open source automation testing tools that will allow testing of web applications, calling third party desktop applications and also database testing.
There were separate approaches designed for testing SSAS cubes and web applications. Both the approaches were implemented using Ruby scripting, so provided ease of integration.
An approach was developed for automated testing of SSAS cubes using Ruby scripts, SSRS 2005 and windiff utility. The automation suites deployed SSAS cubes, processed them and finally validated the data of various dimensions and facts for any regression issues.
Web application testing was done using an open source framework WATIR, which stood for Web Application Testing in Library. The existing framework provided by the tool was extended by the BSI team and wrapper classes were written over it to enhance or add new features, and also to enforce consistency in development.
The enhanced framework could support IE and Firefox browsers.
Benefits:
Automated testing that the SSAS cubes was tested using numerous permutation and combinations of data resulting in a defect-free release. Moreover, automation eliminated errors which could arise from human oversight while comparing actual and expected results.
Though the Automation Tool evaluation and development of Automation framework required 2 man month of effort.
Overall testing and support costs dropped significantly. We saved 120 man days of effort for 30 test cycle.
Reusability and minimal maintenance effort was required for subsequent release with the web application testing automation framework design using WATIR framework.
